This piece began with my first Tsunami warning after moving to California. Due to the warning we left our house for high ground. Sitting on a mountaintop in the car with my husband and dog, I looked at the beautiful land and water below. I suddenly realized how protected by the earth I always feel. I am as sheltered by the earth as by my home or family.
Technique: The glass area which covers and shelters the flower is etched and softly curved to give a warm feeling. It is protective of the life - the flower, inside of it.
The flower sits on layers of glass mirror etched to look water-like. The layers represent the shifting of the fault that causes the tsunami. They also represent the shifting of layers in our lives that cause personal change. The jagged edges represent a sense of danger. There is no need for shelter unless there is something to be sheltered from---.
The glass is manipulated in a variety of ways in a kiln. Cold glass techniques are also used.
